Pearson ELT Teacher Award 2017 - Competition Terms and Conditions

The competition

The title of the competition is Pearson ELT Teacher Award 2017.

Overview: Pearson ELT Teacher Award is a new global award designed to celebrate good English teaching practice and to showcase teachers who have implemented innovative ways of teaching in their classrooms.

English language teachers can enter the competition themselves or can be nominated by other teachers.

Winners will be selected from each of the five geographical regions (Africa & Middle East, Asia & Oceania, Europe & Central Asia, North & Central America, South America) and one from all Wall Street English teacher entries (“ELT Teacher Awards”).

One winner in each region will be selected by a public vote (“People’s Choice Awards”) together “the Awards”.

The competition will be run and administered online via the internet site (“the Site”).

How to enter

The competition will run from 5th October 2016 (the "Opening Date") to 1st January 2017 (the "Closing Date") inclusive.

All competition entries must be received by Pearson team via the Site by no later than midnight on the Closing Date. All competition entries received after the Closing Date are automatically disqualified.

To enter the competition you submit a completed entry form, which can be found on the Site by the Closing Date.

The form includes the following entry details:

Email address

Name and location of school

To make a nomination you submit a completed nomination form, which can be found on the Site by the Closing Date.

The form includes the following entry details:

The nominee will then be contacted by email and invited to submit an entry form as specified in 2.4 below.

Important note: You must have the consent of the nominee to share their details with us.

Pearson will not accept:

responsibility for competition entries that are lost, mislaid, damaged or delayed in transit, regardless of cause, including, for example, as a result of equipment failure, technical malfunction, systems, satellite, network, server, computer hardware or software failure of any kind; or
proof of posting or transmission as proof of receipt of entry to the competition as this is an online competition only.

By submitting a competition entry or nomination, you are agreeing to be bound by these terms and conditions.

The competition entries for the ELT Teachers Awards in all regions will be judged by a panel of three judges: David Nunan (Pearson author), Melanie Butler (EL Gazette) and Amar Kumar (Pearson Efficacy). Pearson reserves the right to conduct a pre-selection process by suitably qualified Pearson staff. The decision of the panel of judges (acting reasonably) will be final.

The People’s Choice Awards in each region will be chosen by visitors to the site who will be able to view entries by region and can then vote (‘Like’) an entry. Pearson reserves the right to filter the entries and preselect appropriate entries for the People’s Choice. The votes are restricted to one vote per visitor. Voting will take place between 3rd and 20th January 2017.

The Awards are open to a head, deputy head, teacher, teaching assistant, or team in a school or a lecturer or team in an establishment currently teaching English as a foreign language (English language teacher) anywhere in the world; from all schools whether state maintained or independent, except:

(a) employees of Pearson or its holding or subsidiary companies who are professionally connected with the competition or its administration;

(b) employees of agents or suppliers of Pearson or its holding or subsidiary companies, who are professionally connected with the competition or its administration; or

(c) members of the immediate families or households of (a) and (b) above or of the person they have nominated.

There is a limit of one entry to the competition per person but anyone can make multiple nominations.

Pearson reserves all rights to disqualify you if your conduct is contrary to the spirit or intention of the prize competition.

Competition entries cannot be returned.

The prizes

ELT Teacher Awards: Pearson intends to award a winner selected from each of the five geographical regions and one from the Wall Street English teacher entries:

1. Africa & Middle East,
2. Asia & Oceania,
3. Europe & Central Asia,
4. North & Central America,
5. South America,
6. Wall Street English franchising network (global).

However, if the entries from one or more regions are too poor in quality, Pearson retains the right not to award a prize in the region.

The winners of the ELT awards will be invited to attend the TESOL or IATEFL conference, in March and April 2017 respectively. Pearson will cover all travel expenses including economy class flights, accommodation for four or five nights at a hotel with no less than three stars and subsistence up to GBP 50 per day as well as the cost of transfers to and from airports or stations. Travel and accommodation will be arranged by Pearson.

The prize does not include travel insurance, spending money, or personal expenses. Any other costs incurred in addition to those set out above and that are incidental to the fulfilment of the prize are the responsibility of the winner.

Winners will be responsible for ensuring that they are available to travel and hold valid passports, any necessary visas and travel documents for the trip in question on the travel dates specified. If they are not available or able to travel, Pearson reserves the right to offer the prize to the next eligible entrant selected from the correct entries that were received before the Closing Date.

People’s Choice Awards: The winners of the people’s choice award will receive up to 20 Kindles for their class (depending on class size) which will be pre-loaded with a selection of Pearson English Readers.
One person might win the ELT Teacher Award as well as the People’s Choice Award in their region. Prizes are subject to availability. There is no cash alternative for the prizes. The prizes are not negotiable or transferable.

Winner announcement

The winners of the competition will be announced on the Site on 25th January 2017 (Announcement Date).

The decision of the judges nominated by Pearson for the ELT Teachers Awards and the decision of the public for the People’s Choice Awards are final and no correspondence or discussion will be entered into.

Pearson will contact the winners personally as soon as practicable after the Announcement Date, using email address provided with the competition entry. Pearson will not amend any contact information once the competition entry form has been submitted.

A list of Winners can be viewed on the Site from the Announcement Date for a period of at least 30 days.

Claiming the prizes

If you are the winner of a prize, we will contact you by 28th January 2016 via email and you then have until 3rd February 2017 to claim the prize by responding to the communication you receive from Pearson informing you that you have won. If you do not claim the prize by this date, your claim will become invalid.

Your prize may not be claimed by a third party on your behalf.

Pearson will make all reasonable efforts to contact the winners. If a winner cannot be contacted or is not available, or has not claimed their prize by 3rd February 2107, Pearson reserves the right to offer the prize to the next eligible entrant selected from the correct entries that were received before the Closing Date.

Pearson does not accept any responsibility if you are not able to take up the prize.

Limitation of liability

Insofar as is permitted by law, Pearson, its agents or distributors will not in any circumstances be responsible or liable to compensate the winner or accept any liability for any loss, damage, personal injury or death occurring as a result of taking up the prize except where it is caused by the negligence of Pearson, its agents or distributors or that of their employees. Your statutory rights are not affected.

Ownership of competition entries and intellectual property rights

All competition entries and any accompanying material submitted to Pearson will become the property of Pearson on receipt and will not be returned.

By submitting your competition entry and any accompanying material, you agree that:

(a) You have all the relevant rights and permissions to upload the entry and any accompanying material;

(b) You assign to Pearson all your intellectual property rights with full title guarantee; and

(c) You waive all moral rights,

in and to your competition entry and otherwise arising in connection with your entry to which you may now or at any time in the future be entitled under the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988 as amended from time to time and under all similar legislation from time to time in force anywhere in the world.

You agree that Pearson may, but is not required to, make your entry available on the Site and any other media, whether now known or invented in the future, and in connection with any publicity of the competition. You agree to grant Pearson a non-exclusive, worldwide, irrevocable licence, for the full period of any intellectual property rights in the competition entry and any accompanying materials, to use, display, publish, transmit, copy, edit, alter, store, re-format and sub-licence the competition entry and any accompanying materials for such purposes.

Data protection and publicity

If you are the winner of the competition, you agree that Pearson may use your name, image and town or county of residence to announce the winner of this competition and for any other reasonable and related promotional purposes.

You further agree to participate in any reasonable publicity required by Pearson.

By entering the competition, you agree that any personal information provided by you with the competition entry may be held and used only by Pearson or its agents and suppliers to administer the competition.


If there is any reason to believe that there has been a breach of these terms and conditions, Pearson may, at its sole discretion, reserve the right to exclude you from participating in the competition.

Pearson reserves the right to hold void, suspend, cancel, or amend the prize competition where it becomes necessary to do so.

These terms and conditions shall be governed by English law, and the parties submit to the non-exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of England and Wales.
